本書以五位女性的戰爭故事為主軸，以性別、國族為經緯，透過夾議夾敘的書寫手法，從法律、政治、社會、經濟等不同角度，呈現近代中國女性面對日益高漲的政治意識型態，接受政治審判與社會審判的歷程。在「忠誠」與「背叛」交織的人生中，她們的女性意識受到壓抑，但也各自透過不同方式獲得釋放。 各篇在結構上分成三個層次，第一層敘述五位女子的傳奇故事，第二層則從國族與性別的角度，解讀這些故事背後的時代意義，第三層將她們的故事放回近代中國「忠奸之辨」的脈絡之中，加以檢視。除了漢奸審判，本書也試圖透過這個議題豐富的延展性，探討國族與性別論述中所涉及的忠誠與背叛問題。有關五位女性的生命書寫，提醒我們在思考忠奸之辨時，不僅須注意制度面的問題，更應該多一些從人的角度與以人為主體的反思。
