本書所討論為美濃地區鍾屋與宋屋兩家族婦女三、四代人的生命史，其所牽涉的時間軸線橫跨清領、日據到1990年代約近一百二十年間歷史。鍾、宋兩屋屬於美濃傳統三合院（當地稱夥房或屋）之宗族家族，墾拓初期皆陸續從二大庄（龍肚、牛埔）移墾，鍾家往南三公里處，以開發荖濃溪沖積平原為主；宋屋離開美濃庄，西移三、四公里，開發了閩、客交界地。兩屋以家族成員、勞動組織與生產規模不同，因此對兩家族婦女生命史的觀照，有助於理解臺灣客家婦女因所處的地理環境、生活物質條件、信仰、組織、社會規訓等因素的差異，所表現出不同的豐富生命張力與特色。
