本研究之重點主要放在國際海運發展趨勢、大陸主要港埠及亞太鄰近港埠營運發展、亞太樞紐港發展、臺中港出租貨櫃碼頭規模經濟效益分析。透過相關港埠之發展報告、網頁資訊及各港專業資料庫等進行相關之分析，並建立成本函數分析臺中港出租貨櫃碼頭之規模經濟。研究結果顯示(1)新加坡港、香港、上海、深圳、釜山及高雄港都為各大航商洲際航線樞紐港，而與高雄港地理位置較近之香港及廈門港則在轉運櫃上彼此具競爭性(2)航商選擇直靠大陸港口，不利高雄港轉運之發展(3)若大陸港口以裝卸能量餘裕發展轉運櫃業務，將影響高雄港樞紐港地位(4)臺
