冒頭では、杜子春が置かれた立場と、当時の洛陽の繁栄ぶりのコントラストが際立っています。特に、杜子春の境遇を描写する技法は、同じく芥川龍之介の代表作『羅生門』と似ているような気がします。夕暮れという時間設定。ぼんやりと門で空を見上げている様子。それらを際立たせるこうもり(『羅生門』ではからすでした)などのアクセサリーなどです。ただし、『杜子春』は童話としてかかれているので、『羅生門』ほど凝った描写にはなっていないようです。
