享保の改革のころ、15歳の男が叔父を殺めて大坂から京へ逃れていった。河原で乞食をしたのち、僧・弁空のもとで寺男になる。寺で画と俳諧に興味を持ち始めた男は、京を発ち江戸へと向かう決意をする。江戸では俳諧の師匠・宋阿に弟子入りし、宰鳥と名乗る。だが間もなくして宋阿が亡くなり、下総の結城へ。そこを拠点に奥州や北関東への旅を繰り返す。28歳で俳号を蕪村に改め、いよいよ画と句と書に力を注ぎこみ……。
