陳寅恪（一八九○－一九六九），一代史學大家，其學問之淵博，被稱為「教授的教授」，傅斯年曾說：「陳先生的學問近三百年來一人而已。」
陳寅恪晚年詩，專指一九四九年一月至一九六六年四月所寫，目前已知約二百餘首。這些詩有三種情況：一是已尋出本事，學界認同的；二是尋不出本事，見仁見智的；三是尋出本事，而尚有爭議的。本書所解的陳詩即為第三部份。
陳寅恪在《柳如是別傳》明確表達過：「自來注釋詩章，一為考證，一為解釋辭句。」前者是今典，即當時之事實，後者是古典，即舊籍之出處。他認為，解釋古典故實，自當引用最初出處，當最初出處不足時，更須引其他最初有關者以補足，始能通解原作遣詞用意之妙。本書為謝泳教授所著，完全循陳寅恪解釋古典的方式來解陳詩，以尋今典為目標，以坐實史事為追求，落實到具體人事，藉由陳詩來觀察一個知識分子在特殊時代的內心世界。
