本書探討民國元年至1920年代上海通俗文藝雜誌的翻譯文本，以翻譯研究的系統論及期刊研究為方法，先描寫雜誌翻譯的歷史脈絡、實踐概貌和譯者群體，後論證雜誌翻譯在此期間是文人彼此競逐、相互定位的關鍵現場，一方面構築出新的文學經典，另一方面亦催生出多元的通俗文藝。論述所示「通俗」與「經典化」的關係，並非文學內容的本質對立，而是文人以定位為需、以翻譯為徑的動態互現。在一般文學史中，期刊較之成書，翻譯較之原創，往往予人邊緣素材之感。本書聚合兩者而成一論述，望於中國現代文學史的主流敘事之外，提出另一種聚焦於翻譯的寫史角度。
