本书是有关槟城华人帮群关系深入研究的学术论著。作者从小耳濡目染槟城的方言群社会，对本土环境和特性有充分的观察和理解，通过详细阅读《槟城新报》从1895年创刊到1920年代的新闻报道和议论文章，由此查证了许多史实。 本书有两个特点，一是对二十世纪初槟城两个最重要的华人机构，即平章会馆和槟城中华总商会，作了极详细的论析；二是对二十世纪初槟城的"帮"与"帮群"概念，"跨帮"活动，以及福、广两帮的互动关系等提出新的诠释。
