本書透過搜集不同檔案文獻，以歷史社會學的角度探討哈同夫婦與王德輝夫婦遺產繼承的故事，從而帶出女性繼承在近代中國社會所出現的巨大變遷：女性繼承權及被繼承權在與男性家族成員進行競爭時，在抗爭中獲得了法律上的勝利，逐漸打破普羅大眾對原本單一的、純粹只有男性才能繼承的傳統與認同，形成現代意義上男女平等的繼承權概念。

About the author

黃紹倫現任香港大學香港人文社會研究所亞洲研究中心名譽教授、香港中文大學香港亞太研究所名譽高級研究員。黃教授先後在香港大學及香港中文大學取得社會學學士及碩士，之後負笈英國牛津大學，獲得文學碩士及哲學博士學位，主要從事企業家精神、華人社會文化、移民現象、香港社會調查與分析等研究，並在各個學術領域上取得國際稱許的學術成就
