この巻には「礼の巻」と「智の巻」を収める。礼の巻では、犬塚信乃《いぬづかしの》と犬飼現八《いぬかいげんぱち》の２犬士が利根川をのぞむ芳流閣《ほうりゅうかく》の屋根の上で戦う名場面がよく知られている。二人は葛飾の行徳の入江で旅籠屋の文五兵衛に助けられるが、犬塚信乃は文五兵衛の話から、現八とはもちろんのこと、文五兵衛の息子の小文吾《こぶんご》とも不思議な宿世で結び合わされていることを知る。さらに小文吾の義弟房八と妹ぬいの犠牲によって、その子である犬江親兵衛《いぬえしんべえ》も、また犬士のひとりであることが明らかになる。信乃、現八、小文吾の３人は幼い親兵衛を祖母に託し、大塚村にいる犬川荘助を迎えにいく。だが、荘助は主人殺しの罪で処刑されようとしていた…
