吉田松陰は天保元年（一八三〇年）、長州・萩で、藩士、杉百合之介の二男として生まれたが、四歳の年に叔父の山鹿流兵学師範、吉田大助の養子になった。七歳で藩校・明倫館教授見習い、十歳で藩主・毛利敬親の御前で兵学校を卒業し、十七歳で独立の師範（教授）となる。大藩・長州にあって将来を見込まれた大エリートだったが、初めての江戸遊学のさいに、友情を貫くために脱藩したために罪に問われ、籍はあっても浪人に近い身分になり松下村塾を起こす。人間の可能性を誰よりも信じ、明治の英傑を輩出し続けた吉田松陰。やがて激動の時代はペリーが率いる黒船を迎えることになる。武力を背景に開国を迫ったことから松陰の志と人生はいよいよ大きく変わる。本書は、安政の大獄で命を落とすまでの、吉田松陰の疾風怒濤なる活躍とその言葉を解説。 【PHP研究所】
