About this ebook
本書寫作的一個宗旨，是希望建構閱讀西洋政治思想經典時的分析方法及視野；故並不像傳統教科書一般著重典籍內容的逐一介紹，而是尋求將他們歸類後研究彼此間的關係。此外，政治思想好比是冰山浮出的一角，雖然有代表性，但是有賴於水面下廣大的基底之支撐，所以對一個社會的政治、經濟、歷史、文化思想等方面我們都宜予適切注意，以作為理解政治思想史的完整脈絡。本書就是在這兩個特色之下進行撰寫的。不同時間、不同地點的思想家可能共同受到某些核心觀念之牽制影響，可能自覺，也可能不自覺，我們稱之為「典範」；它是貫穿各篇章的某些共同思想方式，時隱時現，不絕如縷。所以從另一種角度來描述，本書可以說是對於西洋政治思想史中一些「典範」的追述，在歷史的舞台上對它們聚焦，提醒讀者他們的特殊意義。
