《六十自述》系依據辭修先生在四十六年二月到八月間，向十多位共事多年的舊識，八次講述以往的經歷，並經與會諸公的補充後而完成。此時距辭修先生就任副總統，辭卸行政院院長職(第一任、四十三年五月)已三年。四十六年二月十七日第一次「談話紀錄」中記載辭修先生的講話：「就個人的職務說，就副總統職迄今將近三年，自問這是對於國家項獻最小的三年。除本職外，有三個兼職，光復大陸設計研究會、革命實踐研究院、石門水庫建設委員會。」到總統府後「曾對岳軍先生(總統府秘書長張群先生)說，除總統交辦事項外，我在原則上不看公事。」辭修先生所說「對國家項獻最小的三年」，及在總統府「原則上典看公文」，亦即說明這三年內公務不繁忙。《六十自述》完稿後，辭修先生因公務不多，乃得從容作最後修改。
