《金瓶梅》是一部激憤之書，也是一部悲憫之書。在中國小說史上，無論是世界觀、價值觀、修辭學，還是對讀者所帶來的令人不安的巨大冒犯，《金瓶梅》都是空前的。時間的流逝從未減損它的「毒素」或魅惑力。然而，在《金瓶梅》的闡釋史上，雖說產生了一代又一代知音般的讀者和研究者，同時也積壓了越來越多的誤會和曲解。 本書作者格非是中國著名的小說家，在反復閱讀《金瓶梅》的過程中，他決意把《金瓶梅》放置於十六世紀前後全球社會轉型和文化變革的背景中去考察，如果不聯繫明代的社會史和思想史脈絡，《金瓶梅》中涉及的許多重大問題，都得不到很好的解釋。《金瓶梅》所呈現的十六世紀的人情世態與今天中國現實之間的內在關聯，給作者帶來了極不真實的恍惚之感。這種感覺多年來一直耿耿於懷。作者感到我們至今尚未走出《金瓶梅》作者的視線。換句話說，我們今天所遭遇的一切，或許正是四、五百年前就開始發端的社會、歷史和文化大轉折的一個組成部分。 為了讓那些沒有讀過《金瓶梅》或不喜歡《金瓶梅》的讀者也能瞭解本書的大意，作者有意借用了隨筆體和例話體的寫作方式。
