本書研究目的，是讓珠三角 (舟丁) 語（「 (舟丁) 」，是古壯方塊字，壯語是小船之意，是古越族水上人對自己族群一種自稱，就是艇家之意，不含侮辱和貶義。今人多寫作「蜑」或「?」）的語言面貌有比較全面深入的呈現。通過研究，我們可以知道珠三角 (舟丁) 語究竟是一種甚麼樣的方言。此外，也探討 (舟丁) 民方言與民俗的消亡原因。
