서울대학교 영문학과・비교문학과 교수. 청교도 문학에서 시작하여 19세기까지의 미국문학을 전공했다. 번역서로 아비탈 로넬의 『어리석음』 등이 있으며 미국문학에 대한 다수의 논문이 있다.
