About the author
계용묵 (1904-1961) 평안북도 선천에서 사생아로 태어났다. 이후 외숙부의 호적에 올라 ‘하태용’이라는 이름으로 개성의 외갓집에서 생활하였으나, 5세 때 외조부와 친모의 사망 이후에 다시 선천으로 돌아와 생부 밑에서 성장한다. 휘문고등보통학교를 다녔지만, 신식교육을 반대하는 조부의 반대에 부딪혀 중퇴 후 서당을 다니게 된다. 성인이 되어 뒤늦게 일본으로 유학, 도요대학교 철학과에서 공부하였으나 집안이 파산하는 바람에 학업을 마치지 못하고 귀국한다. 이후 1920년에 소년 잡지에 소설을 발표하며 등단하였고, 1935년에 대표작 를 발표한다.
