1876~1906년, 한일 양국의 왕복문서를 통해 근대 한일관계를 입체적으로 살펴보다 『구한국외교문서(舊韓國外交文書)』는 규장각 소장 문서로 1876~1910년까지 조선(대한제국)과 열강(청국, 일본, 미국, 영국, 독일, 러시아, 프랑스 등) 사이에 오고 간 공문서로 부속문서 8권을 포함하여 총 30권으로 구성되었다. 일안(日案)은 1876~1905년까지 일본과의 외교문서로 1-7권이다. 『일안(日案)』은 한일 간 근대적 조약관계가 성립하는 1876년부터 일본에 의해 한국의 외교권이 완전히 강탈되는 1906년 초반까지의 시기를 포함하고 있다. 그런 점에서 이 자료집은 근대 한일관계를 가장 입체적으로 보여줄 수 있는 자료다. 특히 동남제도개척사 김옥균의 체포와 송환 요구, 울릉도 밀항 일본인의 난동 사건, 함경도 방곡령 사건, 한일어업 장정 이후 어업 문제, 제주도 일본인 어업 문제, 일본함정의 조선 연해 탐측, 1894년 일본군대의 경복궁침입사건(‘조선왕궁습격사건’) 등의 내용이 실려 있다.
