주인공 프레데릭은 야심가이지만 나태한 인물이다. 그는 자끄아르누라는 유부녀를 사랑하게 된다.
남편이 있는 부인과는 끝내 사랑을 얻지 못하고 다른 여인들을 통해서 대리만족을 느끼려한다.
그러나 그런 대리만족인 일시적인 쾌감만을 가져올 뿐…
아르누는 가족들과 다른 곳으로 떠나게 되고 그는 절망에 빠진다. 자신의 감정이 무너지는 것을 느낀 프레데릭은 자신을 좋아하는 루이즈로끄와 결혼한다.

This is Gustave Flaubert’s third full-length novel, which contains many biographical elements.
Flaubert became infatuated with Madame Elisa Schlesinger at the age of 15. His infatuation continues for the rest of his life, beginning and ending as a one-sided affection.
The protagonist, Frederic, is ambitious but indolent. He ends up falling in love with Marie Arnoux, a married woman.
Failing to win the heart of married Jacques, Frederic tries to push her out of his mind by pursuing other women. However, these flings only bring him momentary relief.
Jacques and her family move away, leaving Frederic in despair. Feeling as if he is falling apart, Frederic decides to marry Louise Roque, a woman who loves him.

프레데릭 모로(Frederic Moreau): 지방 출신의 젊은 청년으로 우유부단, 의지박약, 무기력한 야심가. 그의 감정 교육을 위해 네 여인이 활약한다. 정치가와 예술가가 되려는 야심으로 상류 사회에 입성하고자 노력한다. 노장 (Nogent)으로 가는 배 안에서 우연히 만난 유부녀 아르누 부인을 사랑하게 된다. 낭만주의의 이상주의적 조류에 결정적인 영향을 받은 인물로 표현된다.
마리 아르누(Marie Arnoux) :프레데릭이 평생 연모하게 되는 지적이고 정숙하며 아름다운 여인. 프레데릭에게 가정적이며 모성애와 안정, 위로의 상징이다. 호탕한 투기업자 자끄아르누의 부인이며 두 아이의 어머니다.
로자네뜨브롱(Rosanette Bron) :프레데릭의 정부. ‘여장군’이라 불린다. 아르누, 우드리, 델마르 등 여러 남자들과 관계를 맺지만 프레데릭을 만나 그의 아이를 낳는다. 성격, 계급 등 모든 면에서 아르누 부인의 반대편에 위치한다.
당브뢰즈 부인(Madame Dambreuse) : 상류사회 귀부인의 전형. 귀족 정치가이며 자본가인 남편을 이용해 사교계로 들어오려는 프레데릭과 연인으로 발전하게 된다.
루이즈로끄(Louise Roque): 어릴 적 프레데릭을 만났고 성인이 되어 그를 사랑하게 되는 순박한 소녀. 프레데릭과 결혼하고자 했으나 그가 다른 여인을 따르는 통에 결국 델로리에와 결혼하게 된다.
샤를르델로리에(Charles Deslauriers) :프레데릭의 절친한 친구. 중학교 때 프레데릭과 만났으며 나이, 성격, 집안 배경 등이 매우 다르지만 오랫동안 우정을 나눈다. 프랑스의 정치 경제 상황을 염려하며 프랑스 혁명에도 열정을 보인다.
- Characters
Frederic Moreau: a young and ambitious man from provincial France, with little decisiveness, will and energy. Four women contribute to his emotional education. He tries hard to fit into the upper-class social circle in order to aid his ambitions as a political and artistic man. Frederic meets and falls in love with Madame Arnoux on a boat to Nogent. Frederic symbolizes a person who has been heavily influenced by romanticism and idealism.
Marie Arnoux: an intelligent, reserved mother of two for whom Frederic has a lifelong affection. Marie is the symbol of a domestic, motherly, stable and care-giving person. She is the wife of Jacques Arnoux, a loud and cavalier speculator.
Rosanette Bron: Frederic’s mistress. Known as "the marshal,” she is a courtesan with many lovers including Oudry, Arnoux and Delmar. She ends up having a child with Frederic. She is the complete opposite of Marie, including in personality and class.
Madame Dambreuse: a typical upper-class socialite and aristocrat. She develops a love affair with Frederic, who uses her husband to step into the social scene.
Louise Roque: an innocent girl who meets Frederic in her early years and later falls in love with him. She has hopes of marrying Frederic but, as he maintains love for another, she ends up marrying Deslauriers.
Charles Deslauriers: a close friend of Frederic. They meet in secondary school and become lifelong buddies despite their differences in age, personality and family background. Charles is passionate about the French political scene and becomes involved in the French revolution.

귀스타브 플로베르(Gustave Flaubert)
1821년루앙출생으로 10세부터소설.희곡을쓰기시작했다.
1856년 ‘보바리 부인’을 발표하였으며, 이후 프랑스 사실주의 문학의 대표주자가 되었다.
그의 주요 저서로는 보바리 부인, 살람보, 감정교육, 성 앙투안의 유혹, 세가지 이야기등이 있다.
그의 문학은 자유로운 공간과 자연의 감정을 중시하는 낭만주의를 다분히 지니고 있다.

Flaubert was born in Rouen in 1821. He started to write novels and plays at the age of 10. After an epileptic attack during college, he became more absorbed in his literature.
In 1856, he published ‘Madame Bovary’ and became widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists in French realism.
He is especially known for ‘Madame Bovary,’ ‘Salammbo,’ ‘Sentimental Education,’ ‘The Temptation of Saint Anthony’ and‘Three Stories.’
His literature is known for its devotion to romanticism, putting weight on the liberal use of space and honoring nature.
