아리스토텔레스는 허구적인 서사의 두 가지 유형을 미메시스(mimesis, 보여주기)와 디에게시스(diegesis, 이야기하기)로 구분하였다. 전통적으로 보여주기가 미술과 연극의 영역이었다면, 이야기하기는 서사시와 소설의 영역이었다. 19세기 말 탄생한 영화는 바로 이 두 가지 방식, 즉 보여주기와 이야기하기가 결합된 제7의 예술이다. 본서에서는 ‘이야기란 무엇인가’ 하는 근본 질문에서 시작하여 스토리와 플롯, 3막 구조, 영웅의 여행 모델에 대해 탐구해본다. 나아가 후반부에는 영화 스토리텔링의 여러 요소들을 인물, 사건, 배경을 중심으로 살펴보고 있다. 영화 스토리텔링의 세계에 입문하고자 하는 일반 독자와 학생들을 위한 친절한 안내서이다.
About the author
동국대학교 연극영화학과 대학원에서 한국영화사로 석사를, 애니메이션 이론으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 건국대학교를 비롯한 여러 대학교에서 영화와 애니메이션, 스토리텔링과 신화, 섹슈얼리티에 관한 강의를 하고 있다. 이야기공작소 ‘파수’의 대표이며, 영화연구소 씨네포럼의 운영위원이다. 저서로는 『예술로서의 애니메이션』, 『미야자키 하야오』, 『포켓몬 마스터 되기』, 공저로는 『신화, 영화와 만나다』, 『영화서사 자세히 읽기』, 『신화의 숲에서 리더의 길을 묻다』가 있다.
