중국 전통 선(禪)문의 심오한 사상을 담고 있는 책으로 중국 사상 특유의 장대한 스케일과 풍부한 문학적 상징을 통해 불립문자의 세계관을 제시하고 있습니다. `달마가 말하기를 휑하니 크고 넓어 성인이 있을리 없다`부터 `파릉의 취모검`까지 총 100칙의 공안을 담고 있습니다. 정확하게는 《불과환오선사벽암록(佛果?悟禪師碧嚴錄)》 또는 《불과벽암파관격절(佛果碧嚴破關擊節)》이라 하며, 《벽암집》이라고도 합니다. 선종(禪宗), 특히 임제종(臨濟宗)의 공안집(公案集)의 하나로, 10권으로 되어 있고, 1125년에 완성되었습니다. 설두 중현(雪竇重顯)이 《전등록(傳燈錄)》 1,700칙(則)의 공안 가운데서 100칙을 골라, 하나하나에 게송(偈頌)을 달고 환오극근(?悟克勤)이 각칙(各則)에 수시(垂示)·저어(著語)·평창(評唱)을 덧붙여 이루어졌습니다. 환오의 제자에 의해 편찬·간행된 뒤, 중국과 한국, 그리고 일본에서 여러 차례 간행되었으며, 선종에서는 가장 중요한 전적(典籍)으로 여기고 있습니다. 출처 : 두산백과
