갓난아이부터 소년, 청년, 여성은 물론 노인들까지 제주 도민들이 무차별하게 희생된 참혹한 사건, 제주4·3. 《당신은 설워할 봄이라도 있었겠지만》은 우리가 꼭 알아야 할 4·3의 슬프고 처연한 이야기를 담았다. 책 제목에는 살아 있는 사람들은 설워(서러워)할 봄이라도 있었겠지만, 이유 없이 억울하게 죽어간 자들은 서러워할 봄조차 맞을 수 없었다는 망자의 비통한 시선이 스며 있다. 독립운동가이자 민족사학자 신채호 선생은 일찍이 “역사를 잊은 민족에게 미래는 없다”고 말한 바 있다. 저자 허영선 역시 이 책을 통해 “7년 7개월 동안 제주도민 3만여 명이 희생되었던, 이 대비극”을 항시 기억해야 한다는 마음으로 이 책을 썼다. 제주4·3사건의 비극은 아직 끝나지 않았다. 백비(白碑)에 새겨넣어야 할 4·3의 이름들과 정명의 문제, 진실규명 등 해결해야 할 문제들은 여전히 진행 중이다. 4·3 71주년을 바라보는 지금, 이 시대가 풀어야 할 과제들과 4·3이 남긴 상흔, 4·3과 여성들, 4·3 한복판에서 목숨 걸고 검은 바다를 건넌 재일동포와 그들이 꽃피운 예술, 황홀과 비애를 동시에 간직한 제주의 역사와 자연 등 4·3으로부터 시작된 그 모든 이야기를 담았다.
