선문염송(禪門拈頌) >은 < 전등록(傳燈錄) >과 더불어 세계 최대의 공안집(公案集)이다. 중국에서 출간된 < 경덕전등록(景德傳燈錄) >의 양억이 쓴 서문에 의하면 경덕전등록 전30권에는 1,701명의 선사님이 실려 있다.
그런데 선사님 한 분의 어록 안에 여러 공안이 실려 있으므로 전체 공안의 수는 책에 실린 선사님의 수보다 훨씬 많다고 할 것이다.
< 선문염송 > 역시 본 공안만 해도 1,463칙으로 이루어져 있다. 게다가 각 공안마다 많게는 수십 분, 적게는 한두 분 선사님의 법문과 송(頌)이 딸려 있고, 각 법문과 송에 또한 많은 공안도리가 숨어 있으니 그것들을 다 든다면 만 여 공안이 넘어 오히려 < 전등록 >의 공안 수를 훨씬 웃돌 것이라고 본다.
이러한 보배 중의 보배가 설두(雪竇) 선사님의 후신이라고 일컬어지는 고려 진각(眞覺) 국사님에 의해 완성되어 우리나라에서 초유로 간행되었으니 자랑스러운 일이라 아니할 수 없다.
<선문염송>을 보면 석가모니 부처님께서 병에 따라 약을 주시듯 근기에 따라 갖은 방편을 다하여 자유자재 수행인을 제접하시는 데에서 참으로 희유한 법인 공안도리가 등장하였다는 것에서 새삼 경외감을 느끼게 된다.
