눈치를 보던 레이가 황제와 다섯 걸음 정도 떨어진 거리에 멈춰 섰다.
“내 말이 말 같지도 않게 들리나 보지?”
서릿발 같은 목소리에 레이가 울먹거리면서 다시 걸음을 옮겼다. 마침내 레이가 제 앞에 서자 황제의 눈가가 느릿하게 펴졌다.
“무릎 꿇고 바닥에 앉아.”
레이는 황제의 명령에 천천히 무릎을 꿇었다. 그와 동시에 레이의 턱이 강제로 들어 올려지고 황제가 뜬금없는 소리를 내뱉는다.
“뭐, 쓸모없다면 죽이면 그만이니.”
사실 각오하고 있던 바이긴 했다. 황제의 흥미를 끌지 못하면 오늘 밤 시체가 되어 나가리란 것을 말이다.
“어디 솜씨 좀 볼까.”
