About the author
저자 로버트 루이스 스티븐슨(Robert Louis Stevenson)은 스코틀랜드 에든버러 출신의 소설가다. 어린 시절부터 병치레를 많이 하는 등 마흔 넷이라는 젊은 나이에 숨을 거둘 때까지 폐질환에 시달렸다고 한다. 몸이 허약해서 부친처럼 토목기사가 되려던 꿈을 접고 소설가로 전향했다. 건강에 좋은 지역을 찾아 두루 여행한 것이 문학의 자양분이 되었다. 1888년 사모아 섬에 정착하여 숨질 때까지 이곳에서 살았다. 『지킬 박사와 하이드』, 『보물섬』, 『유괴』 등으로 국내에도 잘 알려져 있다. 뛰어난 고딕 단편을 비롯하여 여행, 역사, 시, 희곡 등 다양한 스펙트럼에서 인상적인 작품들을 선보였다,
역자 정진영은 대학에서 영문학을 공부했다. 상상에서는 고딕 소설의 그로테스크한 분위기와 잿빛의 종말론적 색채를 좋아하나 현실에서는 하루하루 장밋빛 꿈을 꾸면서 살고 있다. 고전 문학 특히 장르 문학에 관심이 많아서 기획과 번역을 통해 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 작가와 작품들도 소개하려고 노력 중이다. 스티븐 킹의 『그것』, 『러브크래프트 전집』, 『세계 호러 걸작선』, 『뱀파이어 걸작선』, 『펜타메로네』, 『좀비 연대기』 등을 번역했다.
