고립된 섬, 수상쩍은 토속신앙의 중심에 한 남자가 있다. 그는 뱀신이라고 불리는 자. 시린 겨울날, 꽁꽁 언 계곡물에 들어가 맨몸으로 기도하는 자. 현혹의 형태로 다가오는 시련을 무릅쓰고 용이 되려는 자. 그는 어느 날 한 여자를 만난다. 그와 비슷하게 종교에 몸담은 이를 가족으로 둔 자. 그러나 신을 믿지 않고, 자기 자신만을 믿으며 악착같이 살아남으려는 자. 용이 되는 길을 학대라고 칭하며 처음으로 손을 뻗은 자. “이게 사람처럼 사는 거야? 너를 신처럼 떠받들면 뭐해! 현실은 이딴 독에 구렁이랑 갇혀서 숨도 제대로 못 쉬고 있는데!” “어차피 이 섬에 발을 들인 이상, 다시는 나갈 수 없어!” 음지에서 자라나 서로의 자유를 갈구하는 두 사람의 이야기. 끝없는 진창 속에서 흰 뱀 한 마리가 똬리를 튼 채 여자를 노린다. 과연 두 사람은 무사히 섬을 나갈 수 있을까?
