제8회 문학동네 신인작가상 수상작. 다소 가볍게 다가오는 만화라는 양식을 착용해 슈퍼맨, 배트맨, 원더우먼, 아쿠아맨 등 미국이 창조한 지구적 영웅들의 활약상 속에 담긴 미국의 패권주의를 폭로하고 문제점을 고발한다. 이 작품에서 주인공으로 등장하는 '바나나맨'은 '겉은 노랗지만 속은 희다'는 의미에서 붙여진 작명으로, 미국인과 백인만이 될 수 있던 영웅으로 간택되지만 결코 백인사회에 편입되지는 못한다. 진정한 지구방위대원이 되지 못하고 언제나 수퍼맨, 배트맨의 햄버거와 원더우먼의 생리대 심부름을 하며 영웅을 보조하는 역할이나 하는 그의 모습은 미국을 선망하고 끌려다니기만 하는 제3세계에 대한 작가의 냉소로 비춰진다.

1968년에 태어나 중앙대 문예창작과를 졸업했다. 문학동네신인작가상을 수상한 직후, 『삼미슈퍼스타즈의 마지막 팬클럽』으로 제8회 한겨레문학상을 수상했다.
