중앙일보 신춘문예에 단편 「여름의 잔해」가 당선되며 작품활동을 시작했다. 소설집 『토끼와 잠수함』 『흉기』 『흰 소가 끄는 수레』 『향기로운 우물 이야기』 『빈방』, 장편소설 『죽음보다 깊은 잠』 『풀잎처럼 눕다』 『불의 나라』 『더러운 책상』 『나마스테』 『촐라체』 『고산자』 『은교』 『외등』 『나의 손은 말굽으로 변하고』 『소금』 『소소한 풍경』 『주름』 등 다수가 있다. 대한민국문학상, 김동리문학상, 만해문학상, 한무숙문학상, 대산문학상 등을 수상했다. 현재 상명대학교 석좌교수로 있다.
