『대한제국기 간도 자료집』은 100여 년 전 간도 관련 자료를 번역하고 정리하는 작업으로 기획되었다. 학술적으로 근대 간도 문제는 영토 문제와 주민 문제를 포함한다. 동북아역사재단과 학계는 백두산정계비 관련 자료 및 을유감계와 정해감계 관련 자료를 엮어 자료집과 연구서를 편찬하였다. 이처럼 동북아역사재단은 백두산 및 간도와 관련한 학술적 기반을 마련하는 데 주력해 왔지만 대한제국 간도 자료에 대한 정리는 미흡한 상황이었다. 이 자료집은 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원이 소장한 간도 관련 공문서를 선별하여 번역하였다. 이 중에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 것은 『함경남북도내거안』과 『평안남북도내거 안』이다. 간도의 현안이 담긴 이러한 문서들을 통해서 당시 변경 주민들의 삶 을 파악할 수 있다. 이 자료집은 간도 문제의 다양한 측면을 소상히 규명할 수 있는 토대가 될 것이다.
