이 책은 소파 방정환 선생님의 동화집입니다. 방정환 선생님은 어린이라는 용어를 우리나라에서 최초로 사용했으며 후에 어린이날이 만들어지는 데에 큰 도움을 주셨습니다. 일제 강점기 시대에 어린이를 위한 동화집과 소설집, 시를 발표한 것을 보면 얼마나 어린이의 중요성을 중요시했는가를 알 수 있습니다. 방정환 선생님은 생전에 동화 70여편을 남겼습니다. 이 책에서는 양초귀신 시작으로 15여편을 원문 그대로 실었습니다. 원문 그대로 싣다보니 지금의 아이들이 읽기에 어색한 문장이 다소 있을 수 있지만 전반적으로 유머와 재치가 있는 작품들입니다.
