About the author
가와바타 야스나리(1899~1972) 1899년 오사카 출생. 도쿄데이코쿠대학(현 도쿄대) 국문학과 졸업. 잇코(一高) 시절이던 1918년 가을에 생애 처음으로 이즈(伊豆)로 여행을 갔다가 우연히 순회 기예단 일행을 만난다. 그 후 약 10년간 매년 이즈 유가시마(湯ケ島)에 있는 유모토칸(湯本館)에 장기 체류한다. 기쿠치 히로시(菊池寬)의 양해를 얻어 1921년에 제6차 「新思潮」를 발간하고 신감각파 작가로서 독자적인 문학을 개척하였다. 1968년 노벨 문학상 수상. 1972년 4월 16일, 즈시(逗子)의 작업실에서 가스 자살을 기도했다. 저서로는 『伊豆의 무희』, 『雪國』, 『古都』, 『산의 소리』, 『잠자는 미녀』 등 다수.
