대표적 인문학 스테디셀러로서 판과 쇄를 거듭하며 많은 독자들의 사랑을 받아 온 김원중 교수의 『사기 열전』이 전면 개정된 개정2판으로 민음사에서 다시금 출간되었다. 2011년 개인으로서는 세계 최초로 『사기』 전권을 완역해 낸 김원중 교수는 이전에 번역한 『사기 열전』을 사마천이 쓴 당시의 환경와 현대 독자의 언어 환경을 동시에 고려하여 원전을 하나하나 재확인하며 점검하고 보완하여 기존의 오류를 바로잡고 보완했다.
『사기』 130편의 절반 이상을 차지하고 있는 열전 70편은 주로 제왕과 제후를 위해 일한 인물들의 전기를 수록하고 있으며, 때로 계급을 초월하여 기상천외의 인물들이 포진하고 있기도 하다. 각양 각층의 인물들의 삶이나 그들과 관련된 사건들을 서술하고 평가하여 사마천의 역사의식이 가장 잘 드러나는 부분이다.
