데뷔작 〈우주인, 조안〉이 안전가옥 스토리 공모전에 당선된 뒤 MBC 시네마틱 드라마 SF8으로 제작되며 화제를 모은 작가 김효인의 《새로고침》이 위즈덤하우스의 단편소설 시리즈 위픽으로 출간되었다. 불법이 횡행하는 부두에서 태어났고, 부모님이 출생신고도 해주지 않아 하루 벌어 겨우 먹고사는 주인공 ‘이태이’의 눈앞에 어느 날 새로고침 버튼이 나타난다. 자신을 버리고 떠난 아버지의 빚을 갚다 못해 인신매매업자에게 쫓기기까지 하는 이 인생보다 더 나쁠 것도 없다고 생각한 이태이는 버튼을 누르기로 결심한다. 한편 이태이가 버튼을 누른 그 시각, 각각 다른 장소에서 ‘새로고침’ 버튼의 유혹을 받은 사람들이 있었다. 동시에 버튼을 누른 세 명의 ‘최악의 인생’이 뒤섞인다.
