생산 활동은 사회 내에서 산업공동체의 협력을 통해서만 이루어진다. 이러한 산업공동체는 크고 작은 다양한 형태가 있으며, 그 범위는 대체로 명확하게 정해져 있지 않다. 그러나 이러한 집단들은 전통, 도구, 기술 지식, 관습 등을 유지하고 전수하는 데 충분히큰 규모를 가진다. 이 같은 전통과 같은 기반 없이는 산업 공동체가 존재할 수 없으며, 개인들이 서로나 환경과 맺는 경제적 관계도 성립될 수 없다. 고립된 개인은 생산적인 행위자가 아니며, 그가 할 수 있는 것은 최대한 비군집성 동물처럼 계절을 이겨내는 것 정도이다. 기술적 지식 없이는 생산 활동이 불가능하며, 개인 소유건 공동 소유건 소유해야 할 축적된 재산이나 부도 존재할 수 없다. 본문 중에서
