연세대학교에서 사회학을 전공하고 워싱턴 대학교(University of Washington)에서 석사와 박사 학위를 받았다. 아이오와 대학교(University of Iowa), UCLA 교수를 거쳐 2001년부터 스탠퍼드 대학교 사회학과 교수 겸 국제학연구원 선임연구원으로 재직중이다. 스탠퍼드 대학교에 처음으로 한국학 프로그램을 설립했고, 2005년부터 스탠퍼드 대학교 아시아태평양연구소 소장을 맡아 역사사회학, 정치사회운동, 국제관계 분야의 전문가로 활동하고 있다. 한국어로도 번역 출판된 『한국 민족주의의 계보와 정치』 『하나의 동맹, 두 개의 렌즈─새 시대의 한미관계』 등의 저서가 있다.
