About the author
아쿠타가와 류노스케 芥川龍之介1892년 3월 1일 - 1927년 7월 24일1982년 도쿄에서 태어난 아쿠타가와는 태어난 지 7개월 만에 어머니의 정신적 이상으로 외가에 맡겨져 이모의 손에 자란다. 그러나 어머니의 병은 자신도 언젠가 미칠지도 모른다는 두려움의 원인이 되기도 했다. 어릴 때부터 문학적 재능을 보인 아쿠타가와는 도쿄제국대학 영문과에 진학하면서 본격적으로 작가의 길을 걸었다. 초기에는 설화에서 소재를 얻어 인간의 이기주의를 주로 이야기했는데, 이 시기의 대표작으로 라쇼몬, 코, 마죽 등이 있다. 중기에는 예술지상주의 소설을 많이 썼고, 대표작으로 지옥변, 희작 삼매경 등이 있다. 후기에는 자신의 자살을 암시하듯 죽음에 관한 작품을 많이 남겼고, 대표작으로는 톱니바퀴, 한 줌 흙, 점귀부 등이 있다. 복잡한 가정 사정과 병약한 체질 등으로 심각한 신경쇠약에 빠진 그는 ‘막연한 불안’을 느끼고, 결국 스스로 생을 마감했다.
