시조는 물론 산문(散文)이 아니며 일정한 규모에 박은 율문(律文)이다. 곧 언어의 배열이 정규로 될 때 그 요소는 질서, 연락, 통일의 세 가지 요소로 되니, 이 요소의 점은 보통 문학의 조직법과 한가지다. 그런데 이러한 요소의 가장 단순한 것은 곧 어사(語祠)이다. 서양의 학자는 보통으로 용어의 다과(多寡), 또 선택에 의한 육체(六體)만 한정한 것이다. 또 하나는 국문체(國文體), 시대문체(詩代文體), 개인체(個人體), 색슨체(體), 라틴체(體), 존슨체(體), 담화체(談話體), 기타 5, 6종이 있어 모두 수십 종이 된다. 본문 중에서
