파라과이 아순시온대학교 경영학과와 장로회신학대학교 신학대학원을 졸업했다. 아르헨티나 연합신학대학원에서 세계적인 해방신학자 호세 미게스 보니노 박사의 지도로 박사학위를 받았다. 대한예수교장로회(통합) 소속 목사로서 중남미 선교사로 25년간 사역했으며, 아르헨티나 연합신학대학, 쿠바 개신교신학대학, 멕시코 장로교신학대학교에서 교수를 역임했다. 순천중앙교회 담임목사를 역임, 현재는 인터넷신문 에큐메니안 대표로 활동 중이다. 저서는 『창세기로 예배하다』(샘솟는기쁨), 『홍인식 목사가 쉽게 쓴 해방신학 이야기』(신앙과 지성사, 세종도서 선정), 『예수, 그 2000년의 믿음과 사랑』(코람데오), 『왜 눈을 떠야 할까』(신앙과 지성사), 『미래신학. 미래세대. 미래교육』(공저, 한국기독교 교육학회), 『기독교 영성과 윤리』(공저, 한들출판사)가 있으며, 번역서는 『욕망, 시장 그리고 종교』(서해문집), 『통전적 선교』(나눔사), 『욕망사회』(한겨레), 『우리 안의 가짜 하나님 죽이기』(신앙과 지성사)가 있다.
