서울대학교 불문과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사과정을 마쳤다. 프랑스 엑상프로방스 대학교에서 알베르 카뮈론으로 문학박사 학위를 받고 30여 년 동안 고려대학교 불문과 교수로 재직하였다. 현재 고려대학교 명예교수로 있다.
