▶ PREFACE. Some small part of this book being personally censorious, and in that part the names of real persons being used without their assent, it seems fit that a few words be said of the matter in sober prose. What it seems well to say I have already said with sufficient clarity in the preface of another book, somewhat allied to this by that feature of its character. I quote from "Black Beetles in Amber:“ ▷ 서문. 이 책의 일부 부분은 개인적으로 비판적이며 실제 인물의 이름이 동의 없이 사용되는 부분이 있으므로 냉철한 산문으로 이 문제에 대해 몇 마디 언급하는 것이 적절해 보입니다. 말하는 것이 좋을 것 같은 것은 이미 다른 책의 서문에서 충분히 명확하게 말했는데, 그 책의 성격이 어느 정도 연관되어 있습니다. 나는 "호박 속의 검은 딱정벌레(Black Beetles in Amber)"를 인용합니다:

 

▶ "Many of the verses in this book are republished, with considerable alterations, from various newspapers. Of my motives in writing and in now republishing I do not care to make either defence or explanation, except with reference to those who since my first censure of them have passed away. To one having only a reader's interest in the matter it may easily seem that the verses relating to those might properly have been omitted from this collection. But if these pieces, or indeed, if any considerable part of my work in literature, have the intrinsic worth which by this attempt to preserve some of it I have assumed, their permanent suppression is impossible, and it is only a question of when and by whom they will be republished. ▶ "I conceive it the right of an author to have his fugitive work collected in his lifetime; and this seems to me especially true of one whose work, necessarily engendering animosities, is peculiarly exposed to challenge as unjust. That is a charge that can best be examined before time has effaced the evidence. For the death of a man of whom I have written what I may venture to think worthy to live I am no way responsible; and however sincerely I may regret it, I can hardly consent that it shall affect my literary fortunes. ▶ In arranging these verses for publication I have thought it needless to classify them according to character, as "Serious," "Comic," "Sentimental," "Satirical," and so forth. I do the reader the honor to think that he will readily discern the nature of what he is reading; and I entertain the hope that his mood will accommodate itself without disappointment to that of his author. ▶ 쓰라린 비어스(Bitter Bierce), 앰브로즈 그위넷 비어스(Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce, 1842~1914?) : 미국에서 가장 영향력 있는 저널리스트 중 한 명(one of the most influential journalists in the United States), 현실주의 소설의 선구적인 작가(a pioneering writer of realist fiction), 미국이 낳은 가장 위대한 풍자 작가(the greatest satirist America has ever produced), 영향력 있고 두려운 문학 비평가(an influential and feared literary critic), 미국 문학에서 가장 위대한 반전 기사(the greatest anti-war document in American literature)…. 1842년 미국 오하이오 주(Meigs County, Ohio)에서 Marcus Aurelius Bierce(1799~1876)와 Laura Sherwood Bierce의 아들로 태어난 앰브로즈 그위넷 비어스(Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce)(1842~1913?)는 무려 12명의 형제자매(Abigail, Amelia, Ann, Addison, Aurelius, Augustus, Almeda, Andrew, Albert, Arthur, Adelia, and Aurelia)를 가진 대가족의 10번째 아들이였습니다. 그의 형제자매는 첫째 아비가일(Abigail)부터 13번째 오렐리아(Aurelia)까지 모두 A로 시작하는 이름을 가졌습니다. 그의 부모가 자녀 이름을 지을 때 영어 사전 A 파트‘만’ 참조하지 않았나 싶네요. 그의 부모님은 ‘가난하지만 책을 좋아하였고(a poor but literary couple)’ 그 덕분에 앰브로즈는 책과 글쓰기에 친숙한 문학 소년으로 자랄 수 있었습니다. 그의 유년기는 이후 그가 15살 때부터 신문업에 종사하며, 작가로 등단하는데 결정적으로 기여하였습니다.

 

▶ 악마가 사전을 쓴다면 어떤 내용일까? : 악마의 사전(The Devil's Dictionary, 1906)은 이름 그대로 ‘악마가 사전을 집필하면, 이런 식이겠구나!’하며 읽을 수 있는 사전의 형식을 빌린 풍자집입니다. 왜 작가 앰브로즈 비어스(Ambrose Bierce)에게 쓰라린 비어스(Bitter Bierce)란 별칭이 붙었는지 알 수 있는 작품이자 그의 대표작으로 국내에도 번역 출간되었습니다. 1867년부터 The Town Crier나 Prattle 등 신문과 잡지에 연재한 짤막한 단문이였으나, 연재가 지속되는 30여 년간 꾸준히 인기를 끌며 아류작이 늘어나자 1906년 냉소의 단어장(The Cynic's Word Book) 단행본으로 출간되었습니다. 놀랍게도 그의 아류작이 이미 냉소의 사전(The Cynic's Dictionary)이란 제목으로 출간되었기 때문에 원작자가 사전(Dictionary)을 단어장(Word Book)으로 바꾼 것입니다. 이후 개정을 거듭하며 현재의 악마의 사전(The Devil's Dictionary)(1906)으로 명명되었습니다. 미국 혁명 양천년 행정부(American Revolution Bicentennial Administration)가 선정한 미국 문학의 100대 걸작(The 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature) 중 하나로, 대중적인 인기를 누리며 풍자문학의 전형(one of the greatest in all of world literature)으로 폭발적인 인기를 누렸습니다.

▶ 미국 문학사에서 가장 미스터리 한 작가 실종 사건?! 생몰년도 미상(Year of birth unknown) : 앰브로즈 비어스(Ambrose Bierce)는 자신이 참전한 격전지를 돌아보던 중 돌연 멕시코 혁명(Mexican Revolution, 1910~1920)으로 혼란이 극에 달한 멕시코로 향했습니다. 앰브로즈는 1913년 멕시코의 프란시스코 비야(Fransico Villa, 1878~1923), 일명 판초(Pancho)의 휘하부대에 옵서버(Observer)로 합류하여 전장을 누비던 중 1913년 12월 친구에게 기묘한 편지를 보낸 후 행방불명되었습니다. 당시 그의 나이가 72세의 고령인데다가 전시란 상황이었기 때문에 고령에 의한 자연사인지, 총살인지 사인을 확인할 수가 없어 생몰년도 미상(Year of birth unknown)으로 남았습니다. 공포물과 풍자에 능한 작가의 삶답게(?!) 미스터리한 그의 죽음은 후대의 영화와 소설 등의 소재로 활용되기도 하였습니다. 번외적으로 혁명군의 승리를 이끈 판초(Pancho)는 1923년 암살되었습니다. 기자들에게 멕시코 행을 언급하고 자취를 감춘 이후의 행적이 불분명하기 때문에, 그의 멕시코행 자체가 거짓이라는 주장도 있습니다.
