▶ 철가면(The Man in the Iron Mask)은 과연 누구일까?! : ‘철가면’은 알렉상드르 뒤마의 소설로 전 세계에 명성을 떨친 ‘신원 미상의 죄수’로 뒤마 이전에도, 이후에도 수많은 작가와 감독에게 영감을 선사한 미스테리 캐릭터입니다. 1669~1670년 체포되어 종신형을 언도받고, 1703년 파리 바스티유 감옥에서 사망한 그의 정체에 대해서는 다양한 썰 – 루이 13세(Louis XIII)(1601~1643)의 사생아 혹은 루이 14세의 친아버지, 정치인 헨리 크롬웰(Henry Cromwell)(1628~1674), 정치인 올리버 크롬웰(Oliver Cromwell)(1599~1658)의 숨겨진 아들, 앙리 4세(Henri IV de France)(1553~1610) 사생아 프랑수아 드 벤드메(Duc de Beaufort)(1616~1669) 등이 존재합니다. 사실 그의 얼굴은 철가면이 아니라 검은 벨벳 천으로 가려져 있었는데, 이를 오인한 볼테르(Voltaire)(1694~1778)의 백과사전에 대한 질문(Questions sur l'Encyclopédie)(1771)을 통해 철가면(The Man in the Iron Mask)이란 명성(?!)을 얻게 되었습니다.

▶ 알렉상드르 뒤마(Alexandre Dumas)(1802~1870)

 

▶ 복수극의 완성자, 알렉상드르 뒤마(Alexandre Dumas)(1802~1870) : 두마스 다비 데 라 파일테리(Dumas Davy de la Pailyterie), 일명 알렉상드르 뒤마(Alexandre Dumas)는 프랑스군의 장군으로 활약하는 토마스 알렉산드르 뒤마스(Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie)와 여관집 딸 마리 루이제 엘리자베스 라부렛(Marie-Louise Elisabeth Labouret Dumas) 사이에서 태어났습니다. 그의 할머니는 출신이 알려지지 않은 아프리카계 케러비언 혼혈(Afro-Caribbean people)로, 뒤마 또한 흑인 쿼터(1/4)입니다. 프랑스를 중심으로 벨기에, 러시아, 이탈리아 등 유럽에서 활동하는 동안 곱슬머리와 어두운 피부 덕분에 평생을 인종 차별에 시달렸습니다.

 

▶ 그의 아버지는 당시 프랑스의 식민지였던 현재의 아이티(Haiti)에서 태어났으나, 프랑스 군사학교에서 교육받은 후 31세의 나이로 장군으로 진급할 정도로 탁월한 재능을 발휘하였습니다. 이는 프랑스 군 최초의 아프리카-안틸레스 출신 군인(the first soldier of Afro-Antilles)이란 대기록입니다. 그의 아버지는 그의 나이 불과 4세 때 사망하였고, 그의 가족은 빈곤함을 면치 못하였습니다. 그러나 프랑스 대혁명(1789~1799) 당시 나폴레옹 보나파르트 휘하의 장군으로 활약한 아버지 토마스 알렉산드르 뒤마스 장군(General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas)이란 후광 덕분에, 상류층과 어렵지 않게 교류할 수 있었고, 성인이 된 후 파리에서 극작가로 등단할 수 있게 됩니다.

 

▶ 뒤마는 처음으로 출간한 희곡 헨리 3세와 그의 궁정(Henry III and His Courts)(1829)부터 인기몰이에 성공합니다! 이를 기반으로 생계를 위한 필경사(筆耕士)를 때려치우고, 전업 작가로 활동할 수 있었습니다. 뒤마는 수많은 여인들(40여명)과 사랑을 나누고(그의 사생아는 ‘최소’ 4명으로 추정됩니다.), (훗날 음식과 관련한 책을 집필할 정도로) 진귀한 음식에 열광하였으며, 파리 근교에 자신의 작품명을 딴 성(몽테 크리스토 성)을 세우는 등 평생 스캔들과 사치로부터 자유롭지 않았습니다. 그렇기에 많은 돈을 벌수록 더더욱 돈이 필요했고, 이 때문에 평생 근면성실(?!)한 집필을 멈추지 않았습니다. 그가 평생 출간한 책, 연재, 희곡 등의 총 분량은 무려 10만 페이지에 달합니다만, 국내 번역본이 출간된 것은 극히 일부에 불과합니다.

 

▶ 알렉상드르 뒤마 페르(Alexandre Dumas père)의 페르(père)는 아버지(dad)란 뜻으로 그의 사생아 아들 알렉상드르 뒤마 피스(Alexandre Dumas fils)와 구분하기 위해 붙인 것입니다. 피스(fils) 또한 프랑스어로 아들(son)이란 뜻. 아버지와 마찬가지로 춘희(La dame aux camélias(1848)를 비롯한 희곡을 다수 집필한 극작가로 활동하였으며, 그의 원작 희곡을 바탕으로 주세페 베르디(Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi)는 3막의 오페라 라 트라비아타(La traviata)(1853)를 작곡하였습니다.

"세상에는 행복도 불행도 없습니다. 한 국가와 다른 국가를 비교할 뿐이지 그 이상은 없습니다. 가장 깊은 슬픔을 느낀 사람은 최고의 행복을 경험할 수 있습니다. 우리는 죽는 것이 무엇인지 느꼈을 것입니다, 모렐, 우리는 삶의 즐거움을 느낄지도 모릅니다.

 

▶ 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장(ordre national de la Légion d’honneur)(1837) : 뒤마는 1837년 프랑스의 정치∙경제∙문화 등의 발전에 공적이 있는 사람에게 수여하는 최고 권위의 훈장 - 레지옹 도뇌르(ordre national de la Légion d’honneur) 훈장을 수여받았습니다. 레지옹 도뇌르(ordre national de la Légion d’honneur)는 나폴레옹 1세가 1802년 새롭게 제정한 것으로, 뒤마가 수상한 것은 가장 낮은 단계의 슈발리에(Chevalier) 등급입니다. 뒤마가 자신의 아버지의 활약을 썩 좋아할 수만은 없었던 나폴레옹 1세를 경멸하였는데, 그의 사후이기는 하지만 그가 제정한 훈장을 받을 때 어떤 기분이었을지 궁금해지네요. 뒤마는 자신의 작품에서 줄곧 나폴레옹 1세를 부정적으로 묘사하였습니다. 뒤마의 훈장 수상은 당연히 그의 대표작 삼총사(The Three Musketers)(1844)나 몽테 크리스토 백작(The Count of Monte Cristo)(1844) 덕분이라고 생각할 수 있겠습니다만, 그보다 훨씬 빠른 1837년입니다. 즉 당대 프랑스 문학계에서 뒤마는 소설이 아닌 극작가로써 이미 훈장을 받을 정도로 당대 최고의 인기와 권위를 인정받았음을 미루어 짐작할 수 있습니다.

 

▶ 클럽 데스 하시신스(Club des Hashischins)(1844~1849) : 뒤마는 그의 대표작 몽테 크리스토 백작(The Count of Monte Cristo)(1844)에서 하시시(hashish)를 열 번 이상 언급하였을 뿐만 아니라, 그 묘사 또한 해보지 않고서는 하기 어려울 정도로 디테일합니다. 뒤마는 실제로 파리의 호텔 Hôtel de Lauzun 클럽 데스 하시신스(Club des Hashischins)에서 당대의 문호, 정치인 등과 함께 하시시(hashish)를 즐겼습니다.

 

▶ 프랑스 역사상 판테온(Panthéon)에 안장된 6번째 문인(2002) : 알렉상드르 뒤마(Alexandre Dumas)는 1870년 숨을 거두었습니다. 그의 시신은 뇌빌르-레-디에쁘(Neuville-lès-Dieppe)에 최초로 매장된 후 자신이 태어난 고향 빌러스-코테르테츠(Villers-Cotterêts)으로 이장되었습니다. 그리고 2002년 탄생 200주년을 맞아 프랑스를 대표하는 문호로 인정받아 파리의 판테온(Panthéon)으로 이장되었습니다. 이는 프랑스 역사상 판테온(Panthéon)에 안장된 6번째 문인이란 대기록으로, 이장식은 방송을 통해 프랑스 전역에 방영되었습니다. 뒤마의 유언을 따른 빌러스-코테르테츠(Villers-Cotterêts) 마을 주민들이 반대하였으나, 뭐……. 자크 르네 시라크(Jacques René Chirac)(1932년 11월 29일 ~ 2019년 9월 26일) 프랑스 대통령은 거부하기엔 너무나 거물이지요.

 

▶ 프랑스2(France 2) 위대한 프랑스인(The Greatest Frenchman) 68위(2005) : 2005년 프랑스2(France 2)는 르 플러스 그랑 프랑수아 데투아레템스(Le Plus Grand Francais de toussemps, The Great French man of the Time)를 통해, 프랑스 국민들에게 위대한 프랑스인(The Greatest Frenchman)(2005)을 조사하였습니다. 1위는 샤를 드골(Charles de Gaulle) 대통령으로, 뒤마는 68위에 이름을 올렸습니다.
