▶ Preface. This monograph was begun during my residence as Rogers Memorial Fellow at Harvard University, and is based mainly upon a study of the sources, i.e., national, State, and colonial statutes, Congressional documents, reports of societies, personal narratives, etc. The collection of laws available for this research was, I think, nearly complete; on the other hand, facts and statistics bearing on the economic side of the study have been difficult to find, and my conclusions are consequently liable to modification from this source.

▶ The question of the suppression of the slave-trade is so intimately connected with the questions as to its rise, the system of American slavery, and the whole colonial policy of the eighteenth century, that it is difficult to isolate it, and at the same time to avoid superficiality on the one hand, and unscientific narrowness of view on the other. While I could not hope entirely to overcome such a difficulty, I nevertheless trust that I have succeeded in rendering this monograph a small contribution to the scientific study of slavery and the American Negro.

▶ 55. The Act of 1807. The first great goal of anti-slavery effort in the United States had been, since the Revolution, the suppression of the slave-trade by national law. It would hardly be too much to say that the Haytian revolution, in addition to its influence in the years from 1791 to 1806, was one of the main causes that rendered the accomplishment of this aim possible at the earliest constitutional moment. To the great influence of the fears of the South was added the failure of the French designs on Louisiana, of which Toussaint L'Ouverture was the most probable cause.

▶ The cession of Louisiana in 1803 challenged and aroused the North on the slavery question again; put the Carolina and Georgia slave-traders in the saddle, to the dismay of the Border States; and brought the whole slave-trade question vividly before the public conscience. Another scarcely less potent influence was, naturally, the great anti-slavery movement in England, which after a mighty struggle of eighteen years was about to gain its first victory in the British Act of 1807.

▶ 하버드대 최초의 아프리카계 미국인 철학박사(Ph. D)(1868~1963) : 윌리엄 에드워드 버가트 듀보이스(William Edward Burghardt Du Bois), 윌리엄 듀보이스(W. E. B. Du Bois)는 미국 매사추세츠주(The Commonwealth of Massachusetts)에서 아이티 출신의 아버지 앨프리드 듀보이스(Alfred Du Bois)와 메리 실비나(Mary Silvina Burghardt) 사이에서 태어났습니다. 가족을 버리고 떠난 아버지를 그리워하며, 어머니와 함께 흑인이 많지 않은 그레이트 배링턴(Great Barrington)에서 성장하였으며, 우수한 성적으로 고등학교(Searles High School)를 졸업하였습니다. 지역 교회 Church of Great Barrington에서 장학금을 모아 주었으며, 피스크 대학(Fisk University)을 졸업한 후 하버드대(University of Harvard)에 진학하였습니다.

▶ “The equality in political, industrial and social life which modern men must have in order to live, is not to be confounded with sameness. On the contrary, in our case, it is rather insistence upon the right of diversity; - upon the right of a human being to be a man even if he does not wear the same cut of vest, the same curl of hair or the same color of skin.
