About this ebook
오늘날 한국 사람이 특히 젊은 한국 사람이 그중에도 남녀 학생에게 고하고 싶은 것이 있다. 그중에는 민족의 협상과 장래에 대한 이론도 있고, 또 내가 우리의 현재와 장래에 대하여 느끼는 슬픔과 반가움과, 기쁨과 희망도 있고, 또 여러분의 속속 맘과 의논해 보고 싶은 사정도 있다. 나는 이 모든 것을 서투른 소설의 형식을 빌려 여러분의 앞에 내어놓는 것이다.
「흙」이 재미가 없을는지도 모른다. 예술적으로 보아서 가치가 부족할는지도 모른다. 어떠한 분의 비위에는 거슬리는 점도 있을 것이다. 그러나 또한 여러분 중에 내 감정에 공명하시는 이도 없지는 아니할 것이다.
비록 여러 가지 부족한 점은 있을 법해도 진정으로, 진정으로 쓴 편지―이것 하나만은 독자 여러분께 고백하는 바다.

이광수는 1892년 평안북도 정주에서 태어났다. 그 후 와세다 대학 철학과에 입학한 뒤 1917년 소설 '무정'을 매일신보에 연재하며 1923년 동아일보 편집부장, 동아일보 편집부장 등 다양하게 활동하다 6.25 발발 당시 만포에서 병사했다.
