의 작자로 알려져 있는 전설적인 인물이며 그리스식 이름은 '아이소포스(Aisopos)'이다. 헤로도토스에 따르면 이솝은 기원전 6세기 사람으로 사모스의 시민 이아드몬의 노예였으며, 델포이에서 그곳 사람들의 손에 불의의 죽음을 당했다고 한다. 재치가 번뜩이는 인물이었으나 추악한 외모에 말더듬이였다는 설도 있고 그가 실제 인물이 아닌 가상의 인물이라는 주장도 있으나, 그에 관한 기록들은 증거가 충분하지 않아 그 진위를 밝히기 어렵다.
