톨킨은 영국의 작가이자 영문학자예요. 1892년 남아프리카의 블룸폰테인에서 태어나 어렸을 때 영국으로 가서 외가에서 자랐다. 제1차 세계 대전에 참전했다가 전사한 친구가 보낸 편지가 계기가 되어 소설을 쓰기 시작했어요.

1937년 《호빗》이 출판되어 영국과 미국에서 큰 인기를 끌었으며, 같은 해 후속작 《반지의 제왕》을 쓰기 시작해서 1955년에 마무리 지었어요. 1965년, 미국에서 《반지의 제왕》이 출판되면서 큰 인기를 끌었지요. 톨킨이 쓴 이야기들은 지금도 많은 소설과 영화의 밑바탕이 되어 재탄생되고 있어요.

About the author

임어진 작가는 2006년 ‘샘터상’, 2009년 ‘웅진주니어 문학상’ 대상과 2019년 한국문화예술위원회 아르코문학창작기금을 받았습니다. 쓴 책으로는 동화 《이야기가 사는 숲》, 《푸른 고래의 시간》, 《아니야 고양이》, 《사라진 슬기와 꿀벌 도시》 등과 그림책 《손 없는 색시》, 《도깨비 잔치》 외에 많은 책을 썼습니다.
