1976년 장편소설 『외디프스의 초상』으로 제6회 도의문화저작상 수상. 1980년 『현대문학』7월호에 단편 「사자의 목소리」, 『동지』84년 1월호에 단편 「잃어버린 세대」로 문단 데뷔. 제2차 세계대전 당시 일본군의 생체실험을 소재로 한 장편소설 『마루타』로 밀리언셀러 작가가 되었다.
