《조선연극사(朝鮮演劇史)》(1933) 판본 수록. 꼭두각시극은 일명 박첨지극(朴僉知劇)이라고도 하나, 모두 인형극의 명칭에서 떼다 쓴 이름이다. 박(朴)은 ‘박’이며, 그 음이 박(瓠)과 똑같다. 대체로 ‘박’은 단순히 호류(瓠類)(조롱박 종류) 뿐만 아니라 함지박, 이남박과 같은 나무로 만든 박이라고 한다. 그러면 박첨지(朴僉知)의 박은 그 인형이 호류로 제작되고, 혹은 목편(木片)으로 바가지같이 깎아서 조작된 데서 생긴 명칭인 듯하다. 그것이 후대에 와서 우연히 박(瓠)의 음이 박(朴)과 같기 때문에 박(朴) 글자를 대입(代入)하고, 따라서 인형을 인격화하여 허름한 벼슬 첨지(僉知)를 붙여 박첨지(朴僉知)라고 한 것이다. 꼭두각시의 각시(閣氏)는 극의 역할상으로 보아 부녀(婦女)라고 해석함이 옳은 듯하다.(중략, ‘꼭두각시극’ 중에서>
