About the author
저자 베어링 굴드(Sabine Baring-Gould)는 영국의 소설가이자 성공회 목사로 골동품과 민요를 비롯해 다양한 분야를 연구했다. 「믿는 사람들은 군병 같으니Onward Christian Soldiers」라는 찬송가 작사가로 또 셜록 홈즈 연구가로도 명성이 높다. 어린 시절 대부분을 가족과 함께 유럽 여행을 다녀서 제도권 학교가 아닌 개인 교사를 통해 교육을 받았다. 캠브리지 대학의 입학 허가를 받고 문학 석사를 이수했다. 1864년 신품성사를 받고 1871년 에식스의 이스트 머스(East Mersea) 교구 목사로 부임했다. 16권 분량의 전기물 『성인들의 생애The Lives of the Saints』와 많은 소설을 집필했다.
역자 정진영은 대학에서 영문학을 공부했다. 상상에서는 고딕 소설의 그로테스크한 분위기와 잿빛의 종말론적 색채를 좋아하나 현실에서는 하루하루 장밋빛 꿈을 꾸면서 살고 있다. 고전 문학 특히 장르 문학에 관심이 많아서 기획과 번역을 통해 국내에 잘 알려지지 않은 작가와 작품을 소개하려고 노력 중이다. 제대로 평가받지 못한 작가와 작품을 재조명할 때 큰 보람을 느낀다. 스티븐 킹의 『그것』, 『러브크래프트 전집』, 『세계 호러 걸작선』, 『뱀파이어 걸작선』, 『펜타메로네』, 『좀비 연대기』 등을 번역했다.
