은 1988년 경남매일신문에 연재되었던 「시습時習의 아내」를 개제(改題)한 작품이다. 80년대 초를 시간적 배경으로 하여, 4·19로 첫사랑을 잃은 43세의 교수 최진우와 80년 광주에서 첫사랑을 잃은 26세의 젊은 처녀 지소영의 결혼을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 이야기가 주된 줄거리를 이룬다. 우리 현대사의 근원적 모순을 함축하고 있는 80년대를 시간적 배경으로 한 데서도 알 수 있듯이, 이제하 소설로서는 보기 드물게 시대와 역사, 현실과 정치 문제를 직접적인 화제로 삼아 조명하고 있는 이 작품은 작가의 창작 도정에서 매우 특별한 의의와 위상을 점하고 있다.
About the author
1937년 경남 밀양에서 태어나 마산 고교를 거쳐 홍익대 조소과에서 입학했으나, 조각과에 입학했으나 곧 중퇴하고 1961년 홍익대학교 서양화과 3학년에 다시 편입하였다. 「현대문학」, 「신태양」, 「한국일보」 등을 통해 시와 소설로 등단했다. 저서로는 소설집 『초식』『기차, 기선, 바다, 하늘』『용』『독충』등과 장편소설 『열망』『소녀 유자』『진눈깨비 결혼』, 『능라도에서 생긴 일』, 시집 『저 어둠 속 등빛들을 느끼듯이』『빈 들판』및 영화칼럼집, CD『이제하 노래모음』등이 있다. 이상문학상, 한국일보 문학상, 편운문학상, 동리문학상 등을 수상했다.
