성철 스님은 1936년 해인사로 출가하여 1947년 문경 봉암사에서 ‘부처님 법대로 살자’는 기치를 내걸고 현대 한국불교의 기틀을 마련한 ‘봉암사 결사’를 주도하였다. 제방 선원에서 정진하다 1955년 대구 팔공산 성전암으로 들어가 10여 년 동안 절문 밖을 나서지 않았는데 세상에서는 ‘10년 동구불출(洞口不出)’의 수행으로 칭송하였다. 1967년 해인총림 초대 방장으로 취임해 한국불교 최고의 설법으로 꼽히는 ‘백일법문’을 하였다. 1981년 1월 대한불교조계종 종정에 추대되어 “산은 산, 물은 물”이라는 법어를 내려 많은 사람들에게 알려졌다. 평생을 철저한 수행으로 일관했던 성철 스님은 1993년 11월 4일 해인사 퇴설당에서 열반에 들었다.
